SUMMARY:Nature/Birding/Tracking Walk
DESCRIPTION:We are going to take a walk in the Otter Cliffs area of Acadia National Park this Friday morning at 10:00\, before our big temperature drop arrives Friday night. We will meet at the Fabbri parking lot which can be accessed from either the Park Loop Rd via the Sand Beach entry gate.\, or Otter Cliff Rd. off of Rt. 3 (Otter Creek Rd.)\, south of the Tarn and Jackson Lab. A friend found lots of signs of otters near the aptly named cliffs on Tuesday. Maybe we’ll be lucky and see more. We’ll also see loons and other waterbirds down below on the ocean and hearty songbirds in the woods. Snow conditions should be good for tracking. Depending on the wind\, we may do a loop around the point or stay in the shelter of the woods as much as possible. Join us if you can before we go subzero!\n \nThe photo shows the trail of an otter with a long slide and a series of bounds\, where the whole body of the otter created depressions in the snow\, on its way between Somes Harbor and the Mill Pond.

SUMMARY:Nature/Birding Walk at Sand Beach
DESCRIPTION:Friday mid-morning looks like a good time to get out for a walk together in terms of the weather. With sun\, cold\, and westerly wind forecast (but no rain/snow mix!)\, Sand Beach should be a good location to meet after it warms up a bit and we should be able to avoid most of the westerly wind. We may find some tracks in the sand rather than snow and we can explore the upper beach area and go down the road a bit towards the cliffs if we want. We may also see some loons foraging off shore. We’ll meet at 10:00 near the top of the stairs down to the beach and go from there. I hope some of you can join us!

SUMMARY:Nature/Wildlife/Tracking Walk
DESCRIPTION:Thursday morning looks like a good time (not too cold\, sunny) to explore the woods\, shoreline\, and north side of Somes Pond. I’m sure there will be many animal tracks and interesting ice/snow formations to find despite the rain we may get on Wednesday. We’ll park along Oak Hill Rd. at the pond access point and go from there. Bring traction devices if you have them as we’ll be out on the ice some of the time. As of yesterday the ice on Somes Pond was 8 inches thick and lots of yellow perch and pickerel were being caught by ice fishers. Opportunistic eagles have been keeping an eye on the pond and crows occasionally keep an eye on the eagles – sometimes from close-up!

SUMMARY:Loons of Mount Desert Island talk for the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Billy Helprin\, Director of the Somes-Meynell Wildlife Sanctuary on Mt. Desert Island in Maine\, will talk about the implications of the behavioral and anatomical specializations of loons which make them so good at chasing fish underwater\, but create many challenges for nesting success and survival. We’ll also talk about the role that the location of loon territories on a large island along the Atlantic coast plays: with easy access by non-territory holding loons residing primarily on the ocean to frequently challenge residents on nearby lakes; the prevalence of splitting time between lake and ocean by territorial residents with chicks; and the opportunity for flight capable chicks to unite with their parents on the ocean\, where the parent-offspring bond has been observed to continue in a new environment for the adult and youngster post-fledging.\nLoon Zooms cost $10 to register\, or register for all 6 for $50.\n \nRegister online HERE.\n \nLoon Zooms are virtual events. Links will be emailed the day before the presentation. Recordings of the presentation will be sent out the day after the presentation to anyone registered.

SUMMARY:Nature/Birding/Tracking Walk at the Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:It’s really too bad to lose the 4-5 inches of powder snow received last night with steady rain and warm temps tonight\, but maybe there will be some snow left in the woods at the Sanctuary that we’ll be able to see animal tracks in Friday morning. It is forecast to be cold and sunny. Bundle up and come join us to find out. We’ll meet at the Sanctuary HQ parking area at 9:30. It may be slippery on the trails so bring ski poles or wear traction devices if you have them. We’ll see what we can find in the woods\, edge of the pond\, and in the trees as our winter rollercoaster gets underway.

SUMMARY:Nature/Birding Walk at Seawall
DESCRIPTION:We will avoid tomorrow morning’s bitter cold (forecast for 6 degrees) and go for a walk Saturday morning at 10:00. We’ll meet on the right hand (west) side of the Seawall picnic area. The temperature should be rising quickly from a low of 18 degrees by then and it is forecast to be pretty calm in the wind department. We should see more winter ducks on the water and songbirds in the shrubby upland edge above the beach. I’m sure there will be some loons out there as well. There will be a high tide while we are there\, so we may see some waterbirds closer to us than usual. Sorry for the late notice\, but I hope some of you can join us!

SUMMARY:Nature/Birding Walk at Eagle Lake-Breakneck Ponds
DESCRIPTION:Tomorrow morning we are going to meet at the parking lot on the north side of Eagle Lake and\, depending on the group’s wishes\, walk towards the Breakneck Ponds or down the west side of Eagle Lake\, or a little of both. I am curious to check out water levels after we’ve had several decent rainfalls this fall and recent beaver activity in the area. Sorry for short notice\, but I hope some of you can join us. Dress warmly of course\, overnight low is supposed to be 28 degrees\, but it should be a sunny morning.

SUMMARY:Nature/Birding Walk at Stone Barn Farm
DESCRIPTION:We are going to go for a walk at the Stone Barn Farm Friday morning at the suggestion of last week’s walk group. We’ll meet in the parking lot along Crooked Rd. at 9:00 (not right by the barn). I haven’t been up into the fields and woods there for quite some time and look forward to walking up and over the hill to Northeast Creek and back. I sure miss exploring the farm with long-time owner and guardian of the property Harry Owen. The property is in good hands with Maine Coast Heritage Trust now. Friday morning we may have some sun shining on us\, as will Harry’s spirit assuredly.
